This is something that has caught our attention due to the recent elections in the US and it’s a question that keeps on being addressed, especially by students and their families. What people in general need to keep in mind, is that nothing is free. Professor need to be paid, the staff working at the Universities needs compensation, and let me not even get into the building maintenance costs etc. So if college was “free” from somewhere these resources would need to come from. Yes, you guessed it…taxes. More taxes!
So what that means that it isn’t really free. You will still end up paying for it. And guess what; you will be paying it every year, regardless of whether you have children or whether they intend to go to college. And say they graduate, why do you need to keep on paying years after that? Also, wouldn’t you be more wise with your own money when it came to college selections? I mean, if someone wants to go to the most prestige college in the market, let him pay for it by himself. Why should society take the burden for that? Generally speaking, civilians and everyday people, know how to handle their money much better than the government does. And not because of their technical and financial skills, but simply because it hurts when reckless spending is done. But when a politician spends countless amounts of money, there is no worry nor consequence there. I you goof financially, you know there is a food line waiting for you. But for the politician there is no consequence, so he will keep on spending recklessly. That is why socialism doesn’t work and this is why, in 2017 people need to educate themselves and look at history: socialism and government interference has never benefited us people when it came to education, healthcare etc. But as I said, I won’t get political. I will save that for some other time.
There also needs to be a sense of responsibility for the students. Whatever is free, has no value (and that goes for all people.) Only when you pay for something, you really appreciate it. So if college is free, students won’t have any regard for the studies, or even if they keep up with the courses, there will be no interest in expanding knowledge etc. How do you think the US has managed to be so ahead of the world when it came to pharmaceuticals? Yes, these companies over price, and yes there are people that dearly need these medications. But without these corporations, you would still and treat fever with weed and natural plants, instead of just taking a pill. If people plan on finding cure for cancer, you can’t limit resources nor regulate intensely these companies. As in all cases, the government needs to have laws and keep people up to the standard of the law, but that is about it. Same thing goes with college tuition. Unless it’s a state University, government should have absolutely no saying in the tuition cost. Because when you do that, you create a monopoly. Let these Universities compete: it will decrease costs and improve quality.
So to answer your question: there won’t be free college for the foreseeable future, and that is a good thing. Start on working to sponsor your college studies (yes, do you know what that word means?) or seek for financial assistance (plethora of financial entities will loan you money) with a plan to get a good job to pay back the owed money and thrive financially after that for you and your family. Don’t keep lowering your success standards, and make sure you are striving for the best. Paid college gives access to people that are only worthy of an education. People that work hard, and are smart. Everyone else can start their own businesses and thrive in other ways. But college education should be for few – it has to be or else then a college education will have zero value (because everyone will have it – thus there will be no competition.)
Is this insightful for a few snowflakes? I’m kidding, I hope you found benefit here and please let me know if there is anyway I can help you out.
